US-11 Pacific Northwest Chapter

PNW JETAA ( has a membership of around 380 members in Washington, Northern Idaho, and Western Montana. We focus most of our activities in and around the Puget Sound area. PNW JETAA also includes our Inland JETAA sub-chapter that focuses its activities in and around Spokane, Eastern Washington, and Northern Idaho.

Working with the local Consulate General of Japan - Seattle and community organizations, we promote and foster Japanese/American cultural exchange, assist with and facilitate personnel recruitment for the JET Program, and provide support and assistance to new JET returnees.

Elections are held yearly in March at the annual Shinnenkai. Our newsletter is published annually in February, mailed to members, and made available on the chapter website. Monthly Officers Meetings are held regularly on the first Monday of the month and are open to all members. In addition, a monthly networking happy hour event is held the first Friday of every month.

PNWJETAA also hosts a PNWJETAA Career Transitions event in late-October or early November. The 2007 Career Transitions event featured a new format in which guests spoke on different aspects of the job market, job seeking skills, and working for a Japanese company. Guests included a Human Resources representative from Microsoft, the Executive Director from the Japan America Society of Washington, and a representative from Puget Sound Energy. Additional panels included “How to market your JET experience” and an alumni Question and Answer session. The 2007 Career Day was followed by a reception and a trade fair attended by area businesses actively looking for qualified candidates, in order to give attendees to the Career Day a legitimate opportunity by the end of the event.

This event was successful due to the use of member contacts to arrange guest speakers and diversity of speaker experience. Positive feedback told us that the variety of vendors accepting applications was a success.

Other chapters considering an event like this are encouraged to:

  • start location scouting early
  • suggest points that speakers can cover and leave plenty of time for question and answer sessions
  • consider ways to divide question and answers sessions for those with interests in education and those looking into other fields
